Physical and cyberattacks on Europe’s energy infrastructure are an increasing threat. WindEurope is working to strengthen collaboration between the wind energy sector and defence institutions, including through the Symbiosis Project, which promotes the co-existence of offshore wind farms and defence operations.
Offshore wind farms can contribute to maritime security by hosting sensors and radars to enhance surveillance by coastguards and armed forces. Although stronger security measures will add to project costs, they represent only a small share of total offshore wind investment. To improve resilience and maintain electricity supply, the wind industry needs clearer guidance and greater support for adopting advanced security measures.
Key steps include:
- Integrating security planning at the start of project development
- Establishing regular communication with defence institutions
- Creating a dedicated emergency contact system for offshore wind
- Conducting regular training and simulation exercises
