Work is progressing on Maasvlakte beach to connect new offshore wind farms to the onshore grid. Grid operator TenneT and contractors are advancing preparations for electricity connections from the IJmuiden Ver Beta, IJmuiden Ver Gamma, and Nederwiek 2 wind farms. Recent work includes the installation of underground land cables transporting direct current from the landing point on Slufterstrand to the converter stations. With that phase complete, preparations for the subsea cable installation have started.
Temporary work platforms are being set up on the beach to support horizontal directional drilling, which will allow cables to be routed underground beneath the beach and seabed towards the sea. The platforms are elevated to provide safe and stable conditions for drilling rigs, generators and other equipment.
Drone surveys are being conducted to collect detailed data on the terrain and subsurface, including soil, elevation and magnetic measurements. Flights are carried out within defined safety and work zones under supervision of certified pilots.
In the coming months, the work platforms will be further equipped. Underground drilling will start in spring, followed by the installation of protective conduits for the cables. Subsea cable installation is scheduled to begin in 2027, with offshore works continuing until 2030.
The beach will remain largely accessible, with work areas cordoned off for safety. Temporary closures or changes will be announced in advance, and the site will be restored as much as possible once work is complete.
