RWE and the town of Bedburg are jointly constructing nine additional wind turbines with a combined capacity of approximately 60 MW on recultivated land at the Garzweiler open-cast mine. The new development, known as Windpark Bedburg 3, will bring the total installed wind power capacity in the municipality to 156 MW.
Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2025, near the existing Königshovener Höhe and Bedburg A44n wind farms. As with the earlier projects, RWE and the town of Bedburg will each hold a 50 percent share in the new wind farm. RWE will also provide a payment of 0.2 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity generated to local communities. Bedburg will receive the majority of this support, estimated at up to €250,000 per year, while the neighbouring town of Jüchen will also benefit.
Initial work will focus on building access roads for transporting large components, followed by subsoil stabilisation through vibro-displacement compaction. Foundation construction is expected during the summer of 2025. The turbines will be connected to the grid using RWE Power’s existing electrical infrastructure at Garzweiler. The installation will comprise seven turbines with a capacity of 7 MW each and two turbines rated at 5.7 MW. The final turbine is expected to be fully operational in the second half of 2026.
