The global offshore wind sector reached a cumulative installed capacity of 83 GW by the end of 2024, according to the Global Offshore Wind Report published by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). This follows the addition of 8 GW of new capacity last year, a 26% decline compared to 2023. Offshore wind now accounts for 7.3% of global wind capacity, with the sector maintaining steady long-term momentum despite near-term headwinds.

The Spanish Government has published its findings on the widespread blackout that affected the Iberian Peninsula on 28 April. The investigation identifies power oscillations as the immediate cause of the disruption but does not determine their origin. It highlights the urgent need for Europe to invest in smarter and more resilient electricity grids to support energy security, competitiveness, and climate neutrality targets.

A cross-skilling pilot in Aberdeen and Grangemouth has advanced efforts to build an integrated technician workforce across oil, gas and wind sectors. The six-week programme supports a more balanced energy transition by enabling skilled technicians to move between industries. Eight participants completed the course in Grangemouth last week, and a further seven are expected to finish in Aberdeen this Friday. Developed by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB), with the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, the pilot aimed to support flexible deployments across infrastructure in both sectors.

The UK Government has released its updated Industrial Strategy, setting out a 10-year framework to boost business investment, job creation and productivity. Alongside the strategy, a Clean Energy Industries Sector Plan has been published to grow investment and employment in clean energy-related sectors.

The UK government and Great British Energy, the publicly owned clean power company, have joined with industry and The Crown Estate to support the next phase of offshore wind development across the UK. This initiative focuses on expanding supply chain capacity, manufacturing, and port infrastructure to accelerate the growth of offshore wind.

Today, 80 to 90 percent of a wind turbine’s materials can be fully recycled at the end of its operational life—a rate significantly higher than in many other sectors. However, the German wind energy associations BWE and LEE are calling for clearer rules to improve circular use of certain valuable materials. A proposal under discussion in the Brandenburg state parliament, submitted by the AfD party, is criticised by the industry as misleading. The proposal suggests chemical recycling methods such as pyrolysis and solvolysis, but these are energy-intensive and not economically viable for wind turbine blades.
